Bald Mountain, June 16

Goals of the visit were

  • Add a box (Box 8) near Box 4 to give swallows a chance to nest and stop harassing the WEBLs in Box 4.
  • Add a hole guard to Box 7.
  • Photograph Pygmy Nuthatches in the demanding task of feeding 10 chicks(!) in Box 6

Most of the time, the adult flew directly into the hole, so it took some luck to catch it pausing on the outside. There are several pictures of tails sticking out, with most of the bird in the hole. Likewise, the exit was usually very quick. These two pictures are separated by 8 seconds. Apparently the bird was in less hurry than usual in this visit to the box. I took 30 pictures to get this pair.

Box 8 in the foreground, Box 3 in the background. Box 8 is not far uphill from Box 4, but not where it's easy to put both in one picture.
