White-breasted Nuthatch makes its own nest hole

While we were concerned about the MOBLs and the charcoal grill, we could hear pecking that we first thought was a woodpecker. However, we soon located a White-breasted Nuthatch excavating its nest hole in a large, dead tree nearby. Here, it's emerging from the hole with a wood chip in its bill. WBNU with wood chip

Here's the nuthatch working away near the entrance. These pictures were made Sat, May 16. As one would expect, it takes quite awhile for a small bird to make a nest hole. It was still hard at work on May 22. You can hear a few seconds of its work on this MP3 made on May 22. Nuthatch at work
