White-breasted Nuthatch makes its own nest hole |
|
| While we were concerned about the MOBLs and the charcoal grill, we could hear pecking that we first thought was a woodpecker. However, we soon located a White-breasted Nuthatch excavating its nest hole in a large, dead tree nearby. Here, it's emerging from the hole with a wood chip in its bill. | ![]() |

| Here's the nuthatch working away near the entrance. These pictures were made Sat, May 16. As one would expect, it takes quite awhile for a small bird to make a nest hole. It was still hard at work on May 22. You can hear a few seconds of its work on this MP3 made on May 22. | ![]() |
